The protagonists are the eternal rivals Florence and Siena, at odds for centuries over control of the Chianti territory: a fertile, strategic zone that was already renowned for the quality of its wines.

Tired of conflict, the two cities chose a solution as original as it was symbolic: a contest in which two horsemen, one for each city, would set off at dawn at the first crow of a rooster on an appointed day; the point at which they met would determine the new border.

The Decisive Choice

It goes without saying that the choice of rooster proved decisive. Siena opted for a white rooster, well fed and carefully tended. Florence, on the other hand, chose a black rooster, kept in the dark and without food. An audacious strategy that turned out to be a winner.

On the night of the challenge, the Florentine black rooster was released and, driven by hunger, crowed before sunrise, while the Sienese white rooster still slept, serene and satisfied. Thus the rider from Florence set out with a wide head start, covering far more ground. The encounter with the Sienese horseman took place at Fonterutoli, near Castellina in Chianti, setting a boundary that clearly favored Florence.

And so the legend of the Black Rooster was born: a story of ingenuity, cunning, and of a crow that changed the geography of Chianti.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="620" src="https://staging.wineschoolitalia.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Castello-di-Fonterutoli-black-rooster-wine-tour-1024x620.jpg" alt="The Castello di Fonterutoli, the historic place where the Chianti wine region’s boundary was defined.
